Gable was a great actor, but never managed the particular apparently effortless high-society style of Grant (random, given that Grant appeared and raised lower middle-class Archie Leach, and never went to school beyond age 14!), and while Tracy was an excellent actor, I wonder if he can have managed the innocence and deficiency of experience that underlay a sarcasm and bitterness inside Stuart's character, and that made it so easy for him to become infatuated together with Tracey as he performed. Tracy's characters always have also been rather worldly wise or perhaps street smart, while in this part, Mike thinks he's clever, but really isn't. Liz, his girlfriend, is the one who understands the planet (and accepts this). She is the women equivalent of Dex in this article; the observer waiting to get the pieces, making sardonic comments as you go along. This movie is smartly and entertainingly written, and delightfully well were by all involved. It's hard to consider anyone finding it dreary or beneath them, but apparently some folks will get anything beneath them. Their loss. If you haven't noticed this movie, do. If you haven't seen it in a very while, watch it again. You won't be apologies. Its mores and assumptions can be a bit dated, but the humor, wit, and heart are never.
